Afro Hair Care Routine: A Step-by-Step Guide

by Beauty Flex UK 17 Oct 2026

Building a routine for Afro and textured hair is mostly about moisture: cleansing gently, conditioning well, and sealing in hydration before you style. This guide walks through each step and shows where to find the products in our range.

1. Cleanse: shampoo or co-wash

Most people with Afro hair wash every one to two weeks. A moisturising shampoo cleans the scalp and removes build-up, while a co-wash (a cleansing conditioner) cleans without lather and is popular between deeper washes. Use a clarifying shampoo occasionally if your products start to build up.

2. Condition and treat

Follow every wash with a rinse-out conditioner to soften the hair and make detangling easier. Once a week or fortnight, many people use a deep conditioner or masque from our treatments and masques collection.

3. Detangle gently

Detangle on damp, conditioned hair, working in sections from the ends up to the roots. A slip-giving spray or conditioner from our detanglers collection and a wide-tooth comb or detangling brush help reduce breakage.

4. Moisturise with a leave-in

A leave-in conditioner adds moisture that stays in the hair. Sprays are lighter; creams are richer and suit thick or very dry hair. Our hair moisturisers can be used between washes to refresh.

5. Seal with an oil or butter

Oils and butters help lock in the moisture from your leave-in. Popular choices include castor oil and Jamaican black castor oil, shea butter, coconut oil and lighter argan oil.

6. Style

For defined curls, try a curl cream, custard or activator from our curly hair products. For sleek styles, finish with edge control. Browse everything in styling.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I wash Afro hair? Many people wash every one to two weeks, but it depends on your hair, scalp and lifestyle.

What is the LOC method? LOC stands for Liquid, Oil, Cream: apply a water-based leave-in, then an oil, then a cream to help hold moisture in. Some people prefer LCO (cream before oil).
